GEORGIJ KIBARDIN (DATES UNKNOWN) [LET'S BUILD A FLEET OF AIRSHIPS IN LENIN'S NAME.] 1931.
40 1/2x28 inches. Ogiz-Izogiz, Moscow.
Condition B+: minor tears in margins; restoration in bottom margin; horizontal fold. Framed.
Kibardin was one of the many artists who toiled away in Soviet State studios to help meet the massive demand for Soviet visual propaganda during Stalin's regime. He might very well have been one of Klutsis' students at Vkhutemas, as his photomontage system is directly inspired by the master designer, reflecting all the impressive design elements that Klutsis himself used. It is a dynamic composition built strongly on the use of the diagonal, with Lenin, the Zeppelins, and the banners held by the crowd below, all at complimentary angles to each other. The graphic movement is accentuated by the tower, jutting up in the middle of the image. The poster exists in different Russian dialects, which change with each poster all the way down to the printed names on the sides of the dirigibles. Power of Images p. 59.
